| We are busy preparing your Roses | |

We've officially started our 2020 digging season! If you're wondering how it is, this is my Italian way to describe it: imagine the longest and heaviest program of your washing machine; the "anti-stain" one, to be clear, not the "fast 30'". We have a pre-wash in May, then a long intense wash in June and July, the rinse in August and the spinning in September. That's why, with Brian and our kids, we always try to go away for a break in October.
It's a long and tiring season, as you can imagine, but also rewarding as it marks the end of the production cycle at the nursery.
We are receiving many orders online, and while we are still lifting, pruning and grading plants, we are already sending out big wholesale orders and organising the individual plants for retail orders.
At the end of this month we'll have all plants lifted and ready to go, and we'll start boxing and posting your order. So, you're still on time to add new roses to your order, place a new one if haven't done yet, and prepare the soil for them in your garden.

| With over 800 varieties in our catalogue, we know sometimes the choice of new roses could be challenging.
We normally suggest starting a selection by the colour you like or you need in your garden. That's why we've grouped our roses in 10 main Colour categories plus one called "Striped Roses" that often includes two or even more colours together.
So, which colour you like? White, Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Apricot, Purple, Mauve, Cream or Brown?

In your garden this month...
Your roses should be now dormant, with a few or no leaves at all, and certainly no flowers.
It's the right time for a deep, winter pruning, at the end of this month if you live in warm regions, or in July if you live in the South or in areas prone to frosts.

| There are many theories about rose pruning and we are often asked which one is the best. Brian just follows two main rules when he prunes his roses: - cut the old wood, - prune to shape. To show you how simple and quick it could be, we are organising a live video on our Facebook page, and we are going to do this online workshop at Balnaves of Coonawarra, where they not only produce great and awarded wines, but they are also passionate about roses and they have a beautiful rose garden around their cellar door.

| Rugosas are a very old group of roses originated in the Far East - Korea, Japan and China - many centuries ago.
They are interesting and unique plants, disease-resistant, with large and often very thorny bushes but delicate and beautiful flowers.
We like them because they are strong rose varieties and perform very well in sandy and coastal soil, on sand dunes and by the Ocean.
We grow several kinds of Rugosas and you can find them in our Old Fashioned Collection. |
